How To

What are the 5S for the workplace?

The first step to making your workplace more efficient is to organize everything properly. An organized workspace, clean desk and tidy room will make everyone more productive. To ensure space is efficiently used, the five S's (Sort Shine, Sweep Separate, Store and Separate) are all essential. We'll be going through each step one by one and discussing how they can all be applied in any environment.

  1. Sort. Get rid of clutter and papers so you don't have to waste time looking for the right item. This means you place items where you will use them the most. It is a good idea to keep things near where you are most likely to refer to it. You should also consider whether you really need to keep something around -- if it doesn't serve a useful function, get rid of it!
  2. Shine. Don't leave anything that could damage or cause harm to others. You might have many pens and need to put them away. It could be worth investing in a penholder. Pens won't get lost anymore.
  3. Sweep. Regularly clean surfaces to keep dirt from building up on furniture and other household items. You might want to purchase dusting equipment in order to make sure that every surface is as clean as possible. To keep your workstation neat, you can reserve a certain area for dusting or sweeping.
  4. Separate. It will help you save time and make it easier to dispose of your trash. Trash cans are usually placed strategically throughout the office so that you can easily throw out the garbage without searching for it. It's a great idea to place trash bags beside each bin, so you don’t have to go through tons of garbage to find what it is.
